Whole Tigernut

The Tigernut has a rough, rounded shape and a certain earth-like colour, since it is buried there until it is removed for consumption. The plant has a characteristic intense green leaf and the actual tuber varies in size. They are harvested from December till March after which they are washed with water, dried and packaged for consumption. Although they are hard as a result of being dried after harvesting, soaked in water for about 2 hours they are rehydrated and become soft again.

Whole Tigernuts are perfect for direct consumption or for the production of Horchata and flour. Supplied in raw form once harvested, cleaned, aired and packaged, we can offer you Tigernuts any time of the year in various sizes ranging from 5mm – 18mm.

Semi-peeled Tigernut

Peeled using a peeling machine to remove part of the hard skin (we leave some of the hard skin on to retain the crunchiness) of the tigernut makes it easier and more enjoyable for consumption as a healthy snack.

Organic

Tigernut flour

Tigernut flour is produced using a milling machine. It has a unique, sweet taste due to its high levels of natural sugar which eliminates the need to add refined sugar making it perfect for people suffering from diabetes. It is gluten free and nut free and therefore suitable for those who suffer with intolerance to gluten, nut allergies or individuals who are just looking for healthier alternatives. The high fiber content of its raw material (Tigernut) makes the product very healthy as everyone needs a minimum fiber contribution each day. Tigernut flour can be used to make a whole array of healthy snacks such as pastries, cakes and muffins.

Organic

Cold-pressed Tigernut Oil

Tigernut oil is the oil extracted from the Tigernut by a cold pressing process in order to retain as many nutrients as possible.

It has a nutty taste and is golden brown in color and is generally considered a healthier alternative and of superior quality to olive oil.

Our harvesting process

All our tigernuts are sown and harvested at one of our very own farms based in West Africa. We would typically sow between April and May with the harvest period usually occurring between the months of December and March. Our harvesters will remove the raw tigernuts from the soil and the nuts are then sifted and washed. There are no artificial chemicals or solvents used in the pre-treatment of the soil ahead of sowing and harvest. Nuts are typically sown up to a depth of 30cm beneath the soil.
Once harvested, sifted, washed and dried we then separate the nuts into the various sizes from small (less than 7.9mm), medium (8mm to 9.4mm), large (9.5mm to 11.4mm) and extra large (greater than 11.5mm).

Pharmacology

Tigernuts are small starchy tubers/root vegetables that apparently were a main part of our Palaeolithic ancestors’ diets. Made in the north of Nigeria into a rich delicious drink called Kunnu Aya, tigernut milk is a popular plant milk amongst Nigerians. Because tigernuts are rich in probiotic fiber, it is particularly good for gut health as it helps to feed the healthy bacteria. Tigernut milk is also high in fiber, helps to stabilize blood sugar and helps boost the immune system.

Tigernuts have long been associated with having the potential to support a healthier way of life with the following being attributed to consumption of this product in either its raw or ground form

HIGH FIBER CONTENT

The Tigernut has a higher fiber content than oat bran, cabbage, carrots, plums and chia seeds. The fiber helps by preventing constipation and acts as an appetite suppressant which helps us to control our body weight.

ONE OF THE BEST NATURAL MAGNESIUM SOURCES AVAILABLE

With only 100gms of tigernuts your body gets 13% to 17% of the daily recommended dose of magnesium. This mineral stays active in the body and participates in more than 300 biochemical reactions for our wellbeing.

CAN HELP TO PREVENT CANCER AND HEART DISEASES

The Tigernut is a source of Vitamin E that protects us from the creation of harmful free radicals which are responsible for the death of the body’s cells. This fact, combined with a high content of oleic acid has demonstrated that it reduces the risk of heart diseases.

TIGERNUT MILK IS A HEALTHY SUBSTITUTE FOR MILK FROM ANIMAL ORIGIN

It’s easy to make your own Tigernut milk with cooking equipment that can be found in every kitchen. With a few Chufas we can prepare a vegetable milk that is healthy, lactose free, rich in calcium and vitamins C and E.

GIVES YOUR BODY MORE POTASSIUM THAN A BANANA

Eating 25 Tigernuts gives the body 139 mg of potassium, this being the same amount typically found in a potato or an avocado and exceeding the potassium levels of a banana. This mineral helps the cells and organs to work correctly. It also regulates muscle contractions which aids in digestion.

HELPS TO CONTROL DIABETES

The high non-soluble fiber content of Tigernuts helps diabetics to regulate their sugar levels. Recent studies have demonstrated that the fiber doesn’t elevate sugar levels in the blood when compared to carbohydrates.

SOURCE OF NON-ANIMAL PROTEIN

Proteins are fundamental for the human body. Different studies have demonstrated that Chufas have a protein content 8% higher than whole meal wheat. Tigernuts also have more amino acids than the current World Health Organisation’s standard for proteins.

HELPS TO CONTROL BLOOD PRESSURE

Its high content of the amino acid arginine helps the body to make nitric oxide. This helps in maintaining dilated blood vessels thus improving blood flow.

HAS THE SAME BENEFITS FOR THE HEART AS OLIVE OIL

Cardiologists recommend eating unsaturated fats and the Tigernut has a lipid profile which is very similar to olive oil which is considered one of the healthiest oils.
